We were lucky to get out on Tuesday, May 27th, right before 4 days of bad weather came in. The group was a father and his 3 sons, which is awesome to see, and they wanted tuna so we set out going south. We made a stop close in at a rig but it looked like a dead zone so we quickly moved on. Next stop had some life so we started trolling. First pass we get a double hookup and things are looking up. However, one was a skipjack tuna and the other was a jack crevalle. Oh well, at least now we have some chunk bait. No more bites trolling so we start chunking and catch 2 30 lb fish pretty quick before the bite really died down. We pushed on to the next stop which would be our last. Being in blue water I pulled out some ballyhoo to troll with and pretty soon we had a good 50 lb tuna on. Got him in the boat and quickly got another bit. This time it was a small wahoo. Nice bonus. Now I was dialed in on where the fish were so we started chunking. It didn’t take long before we were putting nice yellowfins in the boat on every drift. A couple hours later with 9 nice ones in the boat, we hookup to a fish that is acting a whole lot meaner than the other ones. This fish took off about 350 yds. The guys didn’t want to end on a lost fish so we made another drift. We hooked up pretty quick and 5 minutes into fight he spits the hook. One more drift and we hook up another one. This time the hook stays put and we finish off the box with a nice 60 lber. With the day getting late and the seas picking up, we headed in with 10 yellowfins.
